JET Connectivity

Success Story

The World’s First 5G floating buoy

JET ESS was contracted in November 2020 funded by Excellerate Technology to deliver a floating, self-powered, 5G enabled sea buoy for the 5G Rural Dorset project.

Funded by the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), this award-winning project aims to understand how next generation connectivity can help people live better, safer, and more prosperous lives in rural communities and beyond.

JET ESS’s agile and proactive involvement with multiple project partners resulted in additional contracts that delivered key systems to many areas across the wider project. JET’s ongoing contributions include:

  • JET’s UK-first 5G N28 proven routers and modems that enabled the launch of the project’s 5G Stand Alone network.
  • JET’s 5G routers deployed in emergency responder vehicles and publicly displayed digital information screens
  • Always-on real-time sea condition data feed displayed on websites for emergency services and public information consumption
  • Development of a floating buoy constructed from eco-friendly materials to monitor environmental conditions at aquaculture farms
  • The world’s first floating 5G, self-powered buoy platform – deployed in Lulworth Cove July 2021
